The true story of a remarkable man who lived and died for what he believed in...
Born in 1930 and assassinated in 1978, Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) was an activist and politician most famous for being the first openly gay man elected to public office in the USA. In 1977, he was voted onto the city supervisors' board of San Francisco, but the following year, both he and the city's mayor George Moscone were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin). Harvey Milk was previously the subject of Rob Epstein's Academy Award-winning 1984 documentary The Times of Harvey Milk, but Milk is the first feature film to explore his life. Directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting), Milk features a bravura performance from Sean Penn. It's a fitting tribute to a man who embodied hope for a generation oppressed by what was acceptable to mainstream America
